On the 20th March 1838 a 21 year old man, Ebenece Chambers fell from his horse and was killed. He is buried near the footpath on the east side of Stanley Church. Only a grave length away is the body of Mary Marolle. She was travelling from Durham via Leeds and the coach in which she travelled overturned in Stanley village. She lingered for five days before she died on the 25th July 1838 at the age of 25 years. She was on a journey to meet her husband, Mark, who was in Leicester. Mary was the daughter of Robert and Chritole Calvert of Burtlev in the county of Durham, Her headstone says: 'SHE IS CALLED TO MEET HER HEAVENLY SPOUSE.'
