Dear Cheryl and John,
Haller, Luxembourg
is a small village of about 250 people. It is located
approximately
25 miles North, North East of Luxembourg City near the German
border. I have drawn a map (from memory) to our gun sites. The pictures
may
be more helpful for it would not have changed much in 3 years.
Also, the National
Museum of Military History in Diekirch, (about 10 miles from Haller) is
well worth a visit. The farmer in the photo was the one who
recommended
it to us and we have appreciated it ever since.
Don’t know how much
time you will have or what your points of interest are but the American
Cemetery, just outside of Luxembourg City is also worth visiting. One
of my fellow crew members is buried there, (as well as our 3rd Army
Commander Gen. George S. Patton Jr.). He was killed by the
same shell that wounded me. His name was Earnest R. Cowen and he was
from
California. Perhaps you remember from my journal that he was much
older than I and had 4 or 5 daughters. The Curator is very
helpful
and can tell you where his grave is, if you care to visit it. If
you do visit the cemetery, would you please ask the Curator, for me, if
they have a hometown listed for Earnest? I thought it was Santa
Rosa
but I may be wrong. I have, for many years, hoped to contact some
of his family.
Whether or not you
get to Haller, I want you to know how much I greatly appreciate the
thought
and effort. Good luck. Much Love, Uncle Glenn

This photo was taken in June 2000 on a hill approximately I mile
above the village of
Haller, Luxembourg. Anyone in the town could
direct you to it. Looking down the left
hand road., you should be able to see the
white structure in next photo if it is still there.

To left of the farmer, across the fence, about 20 yards is where
gun emplacements were
located, where on the night of Feb. 10,
1945, 5 of Glenn’s fellow crew members including,
Glenn were wounded and 3 were killed. Villagers should be
able to identify the farmer.
